CUAMM’s commitment to assist the displaced in Mundri East County, South Sudan, continues. We are working tirelessly in cooperation with local authorities to manage surgical and obstetric emergencies at the Lui Hospital, as well as providing medicines and other materials.

Working together with local health authorities, we have begun to assess the situation of the displaced population and have discovered that some 14,000 displaced individuals, mainly from Mideh, Buagyi, Lanyi and Lui, have migrated to the Lozoh and Witto payams. The subsequent overcrowding has led to an increase in cases of malaria and diarrhea due in part to the precarious hygienic conditions.

To tackle this serious humanitarian crisis CUAMM has devised a response aimed both at local communities and at the County’s health units. Between October and November 2015 we were able to administer or carry out:

  • 475 vaccinations (primarily for measles prevention);
  • 270 pediatric visits and 557 adult visits;
  • 549 nutritional screenings.

Although the situation remains unstable, it is now slightly less difficult for us to carry out regular activities both on the ground and in the Lui Hospital. There have been encouraging signals from the community, as well; those who have fled their homes are gradually returning and even staying throughout the night.
