Last Friday in Luanda, Angola, CUAMM hosted the first workshop related to a program for diabetes and hypertension screening in patients with tuberculosis. This is a new challenge in our ongoing battle against chronic diseases, a topic that is still little known in Africa.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, TB programmes rarely include NCD screening, but a project in Angola is proving it can be done with great success.
October saw the launch of a new project in Angola to address the problem of malnutrition. This project considers nutrition in a community context, with particular emphasis on mothers and children aged under five.
A Rotary Club project that provided delivery room equipment to the Chiulo Hospital and training to local health workers wrapped up at the end of last month. Here’s a first-hand account by Giovanni Del Frate of his August 2016 visit to the hospital with other members of Rotary Club Udine Patriarcato.
Doctors with Africa Cuamm took part in the Congress of the Angolan Society of Diabetology. Attending were Doctors Eric Lonla, Joseph Nsuka and Sonia Ezaquiela, who are working on a project to improve diabetes and hypertension diagnoses in tuberculosis patients (TB).
Doctors with Africa CUAMM and UNICEF have launched a project in the municipalities of Ombadja and Cahama, in Angola’s Cunene Province, to tackle moderate and acute malnutrition in children – a situation exacerbated by last year’s drought.
Eighty percent of deaths from diabetes take place in mid- to lower-income countries. These include Angola and Mozambique, where Doctors with Africa CUAMM is working hard to meet emerging health care needs.
