Health is a right, fighting to respect it is a duty

1950s – The beginnings

Formerly known as the University College for Aspiring Missionary Doctors, Doctors with Africa CUAMM was founded in 1950 by Francesco Canova, previously a missionary doctor in Jordan. Monsignor Girolamo Bortignon, the Bishop of Padua, immediately lent his support to Canova and the project.

Doctors with Africa CUAMM started up activities under the leadership of Francesco Canova and the Bishop of Padua, Monsignor Girolamo Bortignon, taking as its motto the evangelical instruction “Euntes curate infirmos” – go and care for the sick.

The aim was to recruit and train medical students from Italy and elsewhere interested in spending a period of their professional lives working in the service of missionary hospitals and needy populations in developing countries.
